Exercising in accordance with the respective muscle function is an important factor for the training intensity. The better we are able to perform an exercise in the way the muscle actually operates the more effective our workout will become.
Most muscles not just perform one single function but different ones, like: extension and flexion, adduction and abduction, inwards and outwards rotation, etc. In our body we can find muscles that are just involved in the movement of one joint or muscles that move more than one joint. Muscles that just move one joint can be trained very effectively. If we meet all functions the respective muscle has to operate the regarding joint we fulfil this factor optimally.
Other muscles fulfil functions that affect more than one joint. Here, we have to consider all functions the muscle has to optimize the training. This actually isn’t easy and needs to be treated individually. Buskies W./Boeckh-Behrens W. (2014) have performed a lot of research in that area and developed a list of exercises for all muscle groups that strain the respective muscle in an optimal way. Besides the muscles function there are more factors that determine the intensity and effectiveness of our workout. To learn more please read the article training intensity.
