Health model – continuum
The health model is a perspective to see the physical and mental condition as a continuous oscillation between illness and wellness. This approach follows the health-disease-continuum of Antonovski (Salutogenesis). It depends on two different kinds of factors: the ones that support health, such as healthy lifestyle, good medical care, and regular physical training. And the ones that support disease, such as negative stress, overload, alcohol, smoking, or physical inactivity.
Health model – it is up to you
In the health model the health supporting factors refer to protective factors, whereas disease supporting factors refer to risk factors. In times when risk factors are dominating we have a tendency towards disease. Are protective factors prevailing we tend to be healthy. This shows that we can actively influence our own well-being by fostering the protective factors.
Health model – staying healthy
Here, it is very important to get the right idea of the health model. We are not focusing on what makes us healthy but on what makes us stay healthy! The question “What makes us healthy?” always implies that we are actually sick. But we do not want to get sick. Disease prevention is what the health model is about. And the key element of staying healthy is a health-oriented fitness training.
